OUR STORY

About Us
We’re Chad & Marie Miller, the duo behind Lofty Butter Company and partners in business, life, and butter.
Lofty has always been a little unconventional - just like us. What began as a small-batch dream has grown alongside our family into something bigger than we ever imagined.
Lofty Butter began with a simple question: why wasn’t anyone making small-batch cultured butter here in Ontario?
Already passionate about local food and community, we saw a gap at our farmers’ market and set out to fill it. What started as curiosity quickly became craft: butter made with Ontario cream, fermented with live cultures, and flavoured with the bounty of our region.
Each batch is a labour of love. The cream is cultured for days, then churned in small batches, flavoured, and packed by hand. The result is butter with tang, depth, and character you won’t find on a grocery store shelf.
Over the years we’ve sold at markets, packed orders for delivery across the region, tried our hand at a storefront, and learned a lot about resilience and reinvention along the way. Today, Lofty is rooted in Colborne, Ontario, where we craft cultured butter and dairy with care, creativity, and just the right amount of stubborn determination.
Meet the Millers
Chad is our resident tinkerer and the steady hands behind production. If it can be fixed, he’ll find a way. If it can be built, he’s already drawing up plans. He’s happiest with a fishing rod in hand, lending his know-how to help others, or standing back to admire a freshly finished batch of butter.
Marie (that’s me) handles the dreaming, scheming, and storytelling. I keep the wheels turning on the business side, but what I love most is weaving creativity into everything we do—whether it’s a new butter blend, a market display, or the words you’re reading right now.
Tessa is our bold taste-tester and unofficial boss. She eats butter by the spoonful, corrects our word choices, and brings a whole lot of energy to the table.
Eadie is our newest “butter ball,” keeping life lively and reminding us that sometimes slowing down matters just as much as speeding up.
Our Vision
We’re proud to be part of Ontario’s vibrant artisan food community.
Our dream is to one day expand into a provincially licensed dairy facility. This step would open new doors for Lofty and allow us to grow in ways we can only imagine. For now, we can only sell directly to you, the end consumer, whether that’s at markets and events or through our online shop for local pick-up. It’s part of the Milk Act, and while it’s beyond our control, we are committed to working within it while continuing to build our business.
In the meantime, we are focused on the next practical step: developing shipping so more households across Ontario can enjoy our cultured butters, crème fraîche, buttermilk, and clarified cultured butter at home.
At the heart of it all is a simple belief: butter is more than a spread. It is a bridge that connects us to farmers, to traditions, and to each other.
We love what we do.
We love the community around us.
And most of all, we love really, really great butter.
🖤
